Comma use 1

Do not place a comma between the subject and the verb. Never, ever, ever, ever  do this.

Simple, right?

The cup is on the table; not The cup, is on the table.

But you can place two commas between the subject and verb, usually when you are adding an appositive phrase or relative cause.

The cup, which is a bit cracked, is on the table. [relative clause]

An appositive phrase is when you extend the subject. Here again, use two commas: Bart, the kid with the bulbous head and yellow skin, is in class with you.

So let's rephrase it. Never, ever place a single comma between the subject and verb. If commas are used, they must be in pairs.

Or, even more briefly:

Zero comma:  OK
One comma: NO
Two commas: OK
