Issue

Please don’t write “issue” when you mean “problem”, "predicament", "crisis", "pathology" and so on. It’s very annoying. Use it freely in conversation to disparage your friends, but avoid it in writing.

Today I saw a video of a 747 whose engine had ignited shortly before take-off from Las Vegas. The airport announcer told the passengers that they had an "issue". No, they had a huge airplane in flames  loaded with tons of aviation fuel burning in the middle of their airport. "Issue" does not hack it. And they say the English are inclined to understatement.
