help and can help

Just like  can, the verb help often comes across as uncertain and unconvinced. Think of it as a cowardly word by which a writer seeks to distance herself from the full force and impact of her verb.

"Help" and, worse, "can help" are almost always unwanted guests at your verb party.  Usually all they do is distract from the main verb and make you sound uncertain.  For instance,

The legalization of cannabis can help reduce  the use of prescribed addictive drugs.

is far more direct, powerful and effective if written as:

The legalization of cannabis reduces/ will reduce/ has reduced the use of  prescribed addictive drugs.
