A lot, lots, loads, bunches - plenty

A lot of and lots of are considered slightly informal and therefore not quite suited to a university essay. Even more informal are expressions such as "tons of" or "a bunch of", which are definitely to be avoided.

There is nothing wrong with the expression itself:  just avoid it in academic contexts and choose  many/much,  plenty, a large number of (for countables such as people) or a large amount of (for uncountables such as time).
